The 2011 St.Patrick's Day Parade in Athy,Co.Kildare was a great success.Assembly started at 13:00 on the day at the IDA Centre just outside the town. There was a great turn out of Minors for the parade, twelve in all.We were also graced with the prescence of an Austin A35 and a superb Morgan8.These two cars are owned by two of our club members, such is their enthusiasm for classic cars.
The parade kicked off shortly after 14:00.We were placed in sixth position by the organisers. We were preceded by the local scout group, marching bands, fire brigade and rescue teams,to name but a few.It was good that we got going early in the parade as the Minors don't like traffic.
Most floats stopped at the Emcee's stand for an introduction to their group. We were no exception to this,so we put on a bit of a stint...Denis McCarthy was first to arrive at the stand. After the Emcee introduced and ushered us on,Denis got out of his car and jestured to me that all was not well with his Morris.Myself and John Lawlor rushed to his assistance. When Denis open the bonnet we noticed a lot of loose bits about the engine bay.
In order to get to the root of the problem,we discarded these bits onto the road. They included an air filter housing, two wheel trims,an old boot and a rope. The rope was approx.six feet long but it got stuck when I tried to remove it.Denis shouted at me to give it a good pull and lord behold,it came unstuck along with an attachment,....A rubber chicken..It went down well with the crowd. And if that wasn't bad enough, the car would't start on the key.But not to worry, with a quick flick of the starting handle,it was up and running.
After the parade,we all met up at the Clonard Court Hotel for dinner.
